On the unibodies there is a structure built into the floor of the body. It is a flat box that runs from the step behind the seat, bottom of gas tank sits on it, to about 2 feet of the bed front under the bed floor. It is supposed to limit flex and twist in the body.
Its the back bone of the Uni. If i run across a uni with it rusted out its a parts truck. Actually it starts at about 1 inch aft of the vertical bed panel and is spot welded to the floor and bedsides. It is spotwelded to the front bed panel and the rear filler panel. The gas tank mounts reside on the floor stamping independent of the torque Box
The factory 61 manual shows this fabrication on page 14-15
Some invest the time and effort to repair this but i part them out.
They are shorter on short beds and longer on long beds and are spot welded to the bed sides creating all kinds of pockets for rust to form. Ford never put any paint or primer in there so once moisture finds a way in its a matter of time.
