ATF for a 2000 PSD Auto ?
Had a 30k service done last week, since collecting Moby Dick, he has a "clunk" when the trans engages pulling off the line - it feels like a bad UJ in the driveshaft, but my mechanic says they're all good. As we discussed this, it turns out that Ford gave him Mercon V for the transmission, and _some_ posts say this is bad for this trans.
It seems an extremely suspicious coincidence that the "bad UJ' started the moment the trans fluid was changed, and when moving the race car+trailer yesterday the clunk was 100 times more severe than the genuine bad UJ I had a couple of years ago.
Since Ford has stopped Mercon and now insists Mercon V is good, what brand/version of ATF is truly the equivalent of Ford's Mercon - which has served this truck perfectly well up until now.
Thanks,
Charles
Use the Mercon V.

I still need to do the flush and track down the leak I'm having. I was under the truck for couple hours yesterday cleaning the underside.

Truck went back in, re-flushed removing the Ford Mercon V, replacing with NAPA Mercon/Dextron III and the clunk/thunk has vanished, the trans is back to how it used to be.
Perhaps Mercon V works some/many 4r100s, but not mine, it seems. I'll be greasing the slip joint in a couple of days just in case, but one thing at a time when troubleshooting :-)
Thanks everyone !
Charles
