I recently had the "Check Engine" light come on again on my 1997 F250HD 7.3L diesel. I ran a test with my OBDII system tester and it came up with a code P1396. I looked it up in the OBS PCM codes and read my Ford shop manual but it was of little help in determining what the problem was. My lack of knowledge in diesel engines didn't help either.
Because I bought the truck used several years ago with about 148K miles on it. I have no idea of the maintenence history. I decided to replace the glow plugs in an attempt to solve the engine light problem. I was dissapointed to find out they were under the valve covers. This ought to be a challenge!
After many hours and some choice words I got the valve covers off and the old plugs out. I was pleased to see they were in very bad condition. I would have been upset to find them in good condition after what I went through just to get to them. I installed the new glow plugs, put everything back together, deleted the code and started the engine. I immediately notice a big difference in the way the engine sounded. It ran smoother and it had much more power when I took it for a test run. Best of all, the "Check Engine" light has not come back on after several driving trips.
