He's leaning to a u joint, as am I and a cousin. And I do trust the guy. He's done work for me for years. I'd rather an honest answer like that than a parts changing, money burning experience. Everyone agrees that it is in the drivetrain, so not taking it to a front end shop.
Of course what ever it is keeps getting worse. Pulling into the parking garage this am I could feel it only when I turned sharp. A pulsing pulling, almost like the hubs were locked (which they were not). Got to drive it more later and jack it up.
Can anyone reccomend a good write up on replacing a ujoint? Drove it more tonight. Seems to do it more turning left than right. Both wheels still turn freely by hand when jacked up and turned left/right. But looking like the answer is near - hopefully. Going to need ball joints along with new tires in late 2010 too.

Since you have the front end off the ground, try this: Lock the front hubs one side at a time and then rotate the wheels with the steering turned all the way to one side. That will "work" the u-joint and if it's binding, you will feel it's resistance when the axle is rotating.
Good way to narrow it down to what side and also to confirm if the u-joint is bad or not.
Do you have a steering damper on the front of you vehicle? Mine went bad and it did what you described. I threw about 400 in parts at it before I took it somewhere and he fixed it with a new shock for like 60 bucks with labor. Problem solved...
Just throwing an idea out there. Didnt know that thing could cause so much vibration. Felt like I was driving over a cobblestone road. Bumps in the road would make it start and sometimes make it stop.
Not trying to high jack,,but im having a similar issue. While on the highway,I get a slight vibration at the point where im not letting off the go peddle, but not mashing(I know..mashing ) it either, kinda like floating if you will.I know its not my u-joints since i have had them all replaced(front and rear),"NEW" front driveshaft(driveshaft is custom from a big truck gear shop and u-joints are Spicer)I have also replaced the carrier bearing, and i still get this little vibration that feels like rumble strips.Im thinking something in the rear end(Im thinking bearings more so than gears)but I dont know for sure.Anyway,I didnt mean to high jack this thread but thought my info could be put in your "need to know" book...Thanks..

I'm not sure if this will help, but you failed to mention wheter or not you lifted or put bigger tires on. I had a similar problem last year when I had my leaf springs rearced. I got a vibration when slowing down, even without braking. After 2 u-joints, 1 complete driveshaft, new front hubs and countless other issues, I took it to another spring shop. They told me that I needed to shim the rear end to take pressure of the driveshaft. Apparently there was too much of an angle on the pinion. I had the rearend shimmed and the vibration stopped.
