Front Brake Shield

Hey, so I had a local independent mechanic do my driver's side ball joints today. I just replaced the rotors and pads in front. He said that the shield thing was rusted out, so only two of the mounting tabs were useable. In fact, when I rad the hub replaced at STS last summer, the guys there put it back on like that, which shimmed up one side, putting undue stress on the bearing/seal. So, he said he would put it back together without it, since the nearest place that had it was far away and neither of us had the time to drive there. Do I run the risk of the brake overheating because the shield is not channeling as much air, or rusting out because the rotor is not as shielded from splashes? The tires seem to impede air flow enough that the shield was probably not doing much anyway. Any thoughts?

Humm. Interesting . What do them shields do anyways..
Keep stone chips from the rotors
keep out stuff from the getting to the seals.
Help shed off some water.
Keep an air flow around the rotor.
all of the above

Don't know, just thinking out loud. Here is a bump.
