DB Electrical Alternator - from bad to worse

If you read my other post https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...hs-normal.html you know that I purchased an 135 amp alternator from DB electrical in Jan 09. Shortly after, my batteries died and had to be replaced.

The new batteries were being drained repeatedly. After some troubleshooting, found that the alternator was sucking the batteries dry. Called DB Elect and they agreed to send me a new one.

The new alternator arrived, in a "World Power Systems" box, and is marked as 105 amp output. I called DB Elect, and they said, "the alternator must be mis-labeled, it's a 135Amps" A quick search of the web turned up this info. http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/...a-135a-222393/

Should I just return the 105amp and get a refund and buy from someone else? Or should I just install the one they sent?

Wow, what a bummer. I can only spak for myself, but I'd return it. !st time sounds like an honest mistake, but sending you an under-spec replacement 4 months after they knew it was a problem????? Seems they're willing to sacrifice their reputation for a few bucks. Businesses that don't realize they live or die on reputation don't get my business. Wish I could recommend another, but don;t know of any. Good luck!

That is nuts.

A quality problem with a parts supplier is one thing, but misrepresenting what they're selling or doing bait and switches is quite another.

If it were me I would send it back and spend my money with somebody else.

Well, DB has talked a good game over the phone, and they even explained to me a real problem they discovered with a batch of bad parts after alternators had been sent out, and they do seem to be "taking care of their customers". However, the issue of alternator problems seems to be coming up in different scenarios right now, and I'll have to keep my eyes open to see how this situation turns out over time.

I'd personally demand my money back, but have no idea if they'll do that or not. Most places just want to keep exchanging stuff with you.

You are right on. If you get a defective part and they sent the wrong part replacement that is 2 strikes. Why not get full refund and buy from someone who can supply the right part the first time and quit wasting your time.

I try to buy new oem parts to avoid this frustration. Granted I sometimes buy from local shops but only when I can confirm the correct part first.

I have gotten to the point of taking a photo with me to insure I am getting the correct part (exclusive of OEM Ford parts). I really get tired of, "it looks different but it is the same". Nuts, I won't grind part of my truck or the item purchased to make it fit. If it is the right part it will fit.!

I,m assuming your batteries were replaced by you?? That and the last mishap would have turned my business elsewhere. Really shocked, seemed like they were the place to go.

Here's another option that is supposed to be an excellent alternative.

http://store.alternatorparts.com/199...okediesel.aspx

Their options start at a 140 amp unit and go all the way up to 200+ amps, but their prices are certainly a bit higher than DB's.

Another option you might consider (assuming you can send the new one back to DB) is getting your original alternator rebuilt. Check to see if there are any shops around you that could do it. They may be able to upgrade it, too.

Justin, the Quick Start company at the link I provided also sells rebuild and upgrade kits for OEM alts, if I've read through their info correctly.

Subscribing. I've got a DB starter in my truck and a DB alternator in the wife's truck.

I've got the autozoo 105 amp alternator in my truck which tends to go bad about once a year. Last time it took the batteries with it. DB's pricing, products and service has been good for me so far. I'll be watching to see if that's changed now.

My Hi-Torque starter from DB is still churning out the juice as nice as it did when I first installed it back in the early spring.
