I would get a diesel. A 6.9 or 7.3 for pulling. I have the 6.9L/C6 setup and its alright, but not great. I wish I had at least another gear. As far as mpg, the diesels are gonna get you a few more than a bb, but not awesome like todays 1/2 tons.
Just putting in my two cents.

I'm guess that I'm assuming you want an older truck: 80's. If you're looking for a new rig, apologies and I'll quit buttin in.

I too have the diesel, which is ok for towing. I tow a 27' toy hauler with bikes in the back. I routinely pull down to about 40 mph on hills and it is tough to pass anyone! The C-6 is the best tranny, but no OD. Freeway speeds (70) cause the engine to be in the 2800k range of RPM's. Another gear would be little improvement while towing as I don't think the engine could pull it.

7.3 with the Turbo option would be the best bet. I always get about 10 MPG towing and about about 13-15 not towing.

I can also mash the throttle for extended periods unlike gassers which love to overheat.

a 460 and towing will yield you anywhere from 5-7 mpg while towing. Don't sound like much, but can be twice the fuel bill!

Makes sure you check in the IDI forum if you plan on going this route. 7.3's are prone to cavitation if not cared for.

As long as the gearing in the rear is good the 300 inline six with a c6 trans is a good combo. The six makes quite a bit of torque and can get a bit better mileage than the big boys. It's also very easy to work on and it's nothing to get 300k miles out of one.

I think the only motors that wouldn't have the stones to pull very well would be the 3.8 V6 or the 302. Other than those 2 any of the available motors are capable of towing heavy loads with the right gearing behind them.
