Well, here's my way. I go in the yard or field. I kick it in 2WD. The truck will hardly go (spinning). Put it in 4WD, and it feels like I'm back on asphalt.
The easiest way without having to get too radical with the gas pedal is to find a grassy hill or a gravel road with a decent hill, and try to back up it. Usually it won't go in reverse. Then pull the lever back(with the hubs already locked in) and it should back right up the hill.

Hopefully people still read these old threads.... You said to pull the lever back. now i know your talking about the 4x4 shifter. now the thing is i cant even get that back all the way to like 4lo or even neutral (i believe.which ever one comes after 2h). do my hubs gotta be locked up for that first. and i know its suppose to be in neutral(trans) before it will go. and yes ive done that as well and still wont go down any.
thanks
had y our friends try to look at the tires.. best to have 4 friends or if its a dually have 6 friends, get ona a gravel road, and get them out loking at tire.. then floor it.. how ever many of them are missing teeth from flying rocks is how many wheel drive you have.
Nuetral and 4 low can be a problem to get into sometimes if they're not used very often. Will it go into 4 hi? When I got my first 84 it had been parked for a couple of years and I had to really play with it to get into lo. You may have to crawl underneath to manipulate the linkage by hand or spray it with a lubricant. If it'll go into 4 hi though the linkage shouldn't be a problem it may be binding up inside the T-case for some reason. I'd get it into 4 hi then bump the transsmision from drive to nuetral to reverse and play with it a little at idle to try and loosen up the T-case gears. If nothing works don't ber afraid to pull the T-case and look inside for problems, it's not hard to work on.
