my 1998 f150 has the 4.6 engine with 124k on it.
should i still run 5w20 oil in it?
for most of the 6 years i had it , i have used mostly 5w30 oil

I'd stick with 5W30. My wife's old '98 Sable seemed to burn off a little more 5W20 than 5W20 in its later days (over 100k miles) so I kept using 5W30 when I had the chance. But the few times that I took it to the dealer for an oil change, they'd put in 5W20.
My '02 E150 has been on 5W20 since new, and at 74k miles or so, does not use any oil to speak of, so I'll stick with the 20 in that one.
