I am in the process of buying a 1999 f-250 7.3 automatic trans. 94,600 original miles the truck is pristine one owner.it has the switch on the dash for the 4 wd,when switching to low 4 wd there is a long grinding where it will not catch or engage,is this electric - magnetic or is this serious.the truck is owned by a very-senior gentleman, i do not think it has been engaged or exercised very often. Thanks not sure what to do???

check the fluid

You may want to check the condition of the fluid in the transfer case. I change mine out every couple years or so. I would like to change mine out right now but stupid Walmart in Kalispell stripped out my fill plug! Anyway, a senior gentlemen may not have changed that out too often if at all. Its kind of a pain in the ****. I bought my truck with 28K on it and 8 mos old. At 32K I changed out this fluid and it was fairly narly looking at that point.

Hmmmm, it's been a while since I changed out my TC fluid.
Thanks for the reminder.
