looking for some info on some performance upgrades on a 94 f150 with a 5.0. im a old school carb. guy with a son getting ready to turn 16 and will get a 94 150 from my dad. he wants to up the horsepower a little, but stay in emmision specs. i can suggest a little to him but im not much on computer controlled vehicles. can you get headders, fuel upgrades and so on, bolt on stuff so to speak and where to get them from.
Yes this motor will take a full exhaust system with headers and 1.7 roller rockers no problem. If it's mass air there it will also take a more agressive cam. In both cases the truck will do better with at least 4.10 gears as well.
How about a fuel injector upgrade along with a fuel pressure regulator upgrade. I have a 94 bronco that I want to put a 35-70 psi adjustable FPR on along with 44 psi injectors. Will this be ok with a otherwise stock motor?
No not at all. EFI is not like a carb you don't force more fuel into the motor to get more power, you increase it's capacity to move air and the computer will automatically add more fuel.
Oh, good to know. What do people use the adjustable FPR and the more psi injectors for?
The stock fuel delivery system has its limits(hp) when you reach those limits its time to upgrade injectors, pumps or increase the fuel pressure to maintain the A/F ratio where you want it.
That's right, the stock 19lb squirters can support around 300hp naturally aspirated(no forced induction) so they typically don't need to be touched until the whole topend of the motor has been upgraded. Things like an adjustable FPR can be usefull on race car but it really won't buy you anything on a street vehicle. When the EFI system is operating normally any change you make to the fuel pressure is immediately compensated for but the computer and the net result is zero gains.
However, if one were to want to upgrade the top half later and needed a new FPR they might as well spend the extra $60 and get the preformance one right? Or will they have to upgrade the injectors as well because the stock injectors can only handle 19psi?
16 years old... Be carefull, to much HP will get a new driver introuble, or at least get his parking pass taken away.
My opinion is, if it is a good runnin truck, forget the headers for now put on a nice cat back system, give it a nice deep rumble, a little crack when throttleing. A cold air intake, somethin shiney and nice under the hood, maybe a tune up with Ford MotorSPort wires.
Sound good and look good, is the safe bet, it wont be long and he will know more about the truck then you anyways.

How much HP is too much for a 16 yr old? Some can get in trouble with a KIA, others are pushing over 500 down the track.
Heck- I'm 52, and it doesn't take much to get ME in trouble... I think my Toyota makes about 125?
It is a point well taken though- and something to consider, but it sounds to me like Jr. is going to up the ante with or without good ol' dads help, and at least dad can keep an eye on things if he's in the loop.

What will the 4.10 gears do to highway travel though? I'm not trying to be a smart aleck... (this time), but trying to figure out a good gear ratio for my truck as well.
HWY milage will still be pretty good since the truck does have an OD tranny.. that's assuming Jr isn't doing 100mph all the time.
RPM increases by just 300 at 70mph for example.

What about one with a C4 and smallish diameter tires... (like my'80)?
