OK I took delivery of my 08 Expedition on Saturday and it turns out it has the HD Trailer towing package, a $395 option on the sticker. Seems like a bargain.

Someone is selling new '08 models? HD Trailer tow is very inexpensive and very convenient. Larger engine coolant and transmission radiators and full seven pole wiring.

Sorry to imply that it was new. I took over a lease that has 12 months left and basically took over the payments. The Expy has 10,000 miles on it and is 2 yrs old. It is also in near showroom condition. The owner had three vehicles and was only driving the Expy 5K a year so he couldn't justify the payments. I say we took delivery because we had to go about 200 miles to where the previous owner lives.

The HD towing option is almost cheap. It has both the 4 and 7 pin adapters. Nice.

I'm surprised and gratified you have HD tow. I think something like 8% were HD tow on the dealer stocking list I saw a couple of years ago. Most Expeditions and other SUVs are grocery getters, not tow vehicles. I had to special order my '07 to get this option, there wasn't a dealer within 300 miles who had one with it.

For lurkers, both radiators have been successfully retrofitted by a member here and will boost the maximum towing capacity by 3000 pounds to the 9000 pound range. Retrofitting the wiring is more difficult although the electric brake wire should be at the rear bumper just not connected.

That is a suprising figure. For such an inexpensive option on such an expensive vehicle it seems like a no brainer. My Expedition Limited was purchased at a NYC dealership and also included the 20 inch chrome wheels and Pirelli tires, captain chairs, moonroof, power lifgate and audiofile Sirius radio. It stickered at 45,900 and I think its pretty much loaded. I honestly didn't think it had the tow package until I saw it on the sticker. The seller was not towing anything. He had a very nice decorative chrome step bumper installed there, which he left on the car. Right now I tow a 3,000 pound trailer with my van. Looking forward to getting a camper to take the family camping starting in the spring.

If there's a round "Bargman" trailer electrical connection to the right of the receiver you have HD Tow. All have the 4-pole "boat trailer" connection on the left.

Yes both are there. One on either side of the receiver.

There's a fuse and relay required for "trailer battery charge." Check your tow power box on top center of the engine radiator.

The green fuse and the black relay in the middle of the row of relays.

Tekonsha Prodigy or P3 electric brake controllers remain state-of-the-art and with the $11 optional Ford cable just plug in under the dashboard. Hardest thing is finding a place to mount them. I had the Prodigy with the Explorer and for a while on the Expedition but new truck = new brake controller so now have the P3.

P3 brake controller

I just picked up a P3 brake controller and will be installing it in my 2010 expedition. I noticed in the manual that they state the unit needs to be mounted such that the display is horizontal while in the picture above it appears that the controller is tilted up slightly. It would be easier to see as well as access if facing up slightly. Any concerns with mounting slightly upturned?

No not at all. I think the P3 has a 180 degree range front and back. The manual is likely referring to the tilting left and right and that it has to be level that way.
