i have a 1987 2wd f150 with 4.9L 6 cylinder. I need to replace my 3sp w/ overdrive manual trans and would like to know the different types i can use. The manaul has three types, Borg Warner T-18, New Process 435, Ford TOD. I dont' know which one i have and have to look at the trans. And could other tranmissions work from different engine types and years. Thanks
The transmission you have is the TOD overdrive. The T-18 was a "creeper" first gear tranny. Not sure but think the NP435 was similar to the T-18.
Don't know other trannies you can use but my 1994 4X4 has the 4.9 with a Mazda M50D 5 speed. It's the lighter duty of two 5 speeds used by Ford recently. The ZF tranny is heavier duty but both are hard to come by in my area. A rebuilt ZF can bring up to $1800. Couple of questions for you - are you changing because the tranny is shot? How has the tranny worked for you? I have a '63 Unibody I have considered putting the TOD in if I could make it work.
The trans was rebuilt 4 or 5 years ago. i blew the clutch pretty bad and it knocked the trans out of whack the bearings or something, it is louder than it use to be. The mechanic told me i am going to need a new one but as long i take good care of it right now it will last for a little while. He told me to look for used one for cheaper and i am just getting an idea of what i can use, some guy is selling a trans from a 302 from a mid 80's truck. i dont' want to spend a ton of money and looking for a good deal on whatever comes my way that i can use
Reading the posts to this site indicates the trannies for the 4.9 will work on the 302/351w engines. For my '63 I have a '74 302 from a Bronco and an '80 351w from an LTD wagon. Kinda in the same boat you are trying to find what will work. Even thought about an AOD auto (not the AODE/W)for fuel mileage since the rear axle ratio is 3.89.
If you have the 3sp with overdrive, Ford refers to it as "4 speed M/T SROD". If you decide to swap it out, don't throw it away. I had damaged mine and was thinking about changing it out, but the transmission shop recommended that I repair it. Its a good transmission. He said that if I did change it out, he would by it to rebuild and sell himself.
I had the same tranny on my 85 bronco. boy was it making alot of noise. then I lost the engine. swapped out the 300 for a 302, then the tranny locked up @ a stop sign. darn thing drove in neutral. needless to say I have a cast iron with creeper gear. now I have strength, and great 4x4 ability!
kinda makes ya sick when you pull the tranny out and can carry it with one hand.
