6.9 diesel faq ?

hi
i am interested in getting some basic info on these trucks.
i have a 1985 f150 302 fi 4x4.
and thinking about getting a diesel too

Well...it's totally different than owning or driving a gas truck. You get more low end torque, but the 6.9L is NOT a speed demon by any means. I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago, and am still getting familiar with it, but like it so far. Gotta do a few things to it to make it perfect. Any particular questions or fears?

Just start reading! Before I did my swap I didn't know much about diesels, and after spending months rading everything i could, I have a pretty good handle on them. Lots of good info here.

I second that, I also learned all I know about diesels on here and decided on the 6.9 for my swap as well due to all that I read here. You can't beat them for simplicity and durability.

i was a diesel mechanic in the navy...but that was 25 years ago!
im looking for tech info like a basic overview of the engine,fuel sysytem type etc.engine pics.transmissions used.
what kind of mileage you guys getting?

The '85 gets 13-14 mpg, but its real heavy and built for towing...I'm still working on the '89 so i dont have any consistent mpgs for that one.

As long as it gets over 5mpg (loaded or not) I'll be happy! I haven't done too many miles on it yet, but so far it has way more power than the 454 had.

I get about 12, but that's gonna change. I have low gears and no turbo. Man, there is a lot of things I gotta do!

Are you buying a diesel, or putting a 6.9 in the F-150. If you are planning an engine swap, you will have too much work to do. If you are buying, there are plenty of them out there.

im lookin to buy a diesel f250

hey
im lookin to buy a f250 diesel for towing atrailer
im planning to retire in 3 years and will be looking at atravel trailer too
tranny preferece is c6 i presume ?
will an aod make it?
i dont want a zf in case the old lady has to use it
whats the deal on turbo's.....factory parts off of what year truck?
and aftermarket cost for one

these truck are idi not power storkes no compter they will tow anything just not fast

good trucks dont have a computer.

Just remember a 6.9 is only 175 HP, so a huge RV is really going to slow you down.

Big RV = big sail catching wind behind the truck.

A turbo can make a 6.9 a decent tow vehicle.
