On my 1988 Ford f-150, My hydraulic line will not go in. It goes into the slave cylinder, but pops back out with the slightest movement. So, why won't the coupling stay in? When I took it out , there was a metal ring that looked like a pipe clamp. I just took that out. is that important or am I doing something wrong?
make sure the white plastic disconect is out all the way to the stopping ring, and sometimes you have to really push the coupler together to get it to lock.but take a light and look make sure the small tin fingers are not broken.
Was that the metal ring I took out? It was all jacked up and I didn't think it was important. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of those fingers, would you?
it may have been,it has kind of a copper look to it and has 5 or 6 small fingers on it that hold the line in place,I don't have a picture, wish I did.if you look at the end of your line it has a white plastic collar on it the will slide, this is for dissconnecting the line, look inside the end of the slave cylender where the line goes in,you should see the lock in there.and it shouldn't have come out when you took it apart.unless it was broken anyways.and a good rule to go by is to not throw anything away until a job is done and successful.you never know when you might need that part that seemed useless.
It looked a lot like a pipe clamp. And that thing was damaged, it made it more difficult for the line to come out. But, would I be able to get one of those things by themselves? or would I have to buy a new slave cylinder?
yes that sounds like the piece alright,I'm not sure if you can buy that separate or now,for some reason I doubt it,a new slave is pretty inexpensive, mine cost me $86,but I would check around the local scrap yards to see if they had a tranny out that you could rob the slave from,I don't know if you would ever get that back in,but it sure would be worth trying.
I just called my grandpa, he said I could put a new ring in if I found one. chances are that I'd have to get it from the junkyard. Autozone and all them probably wont carry it.
Well, the thing was all jacked up and not really good enough to reuse. Now either help or go flame someone else. Or better yet, find a better use of your time.
ahh don't worry about 1988F-150,the only people that have never done anything stupide are the people that have never done anything period.hopefully you can find one in a scrap yard and get it back in your slave without trouble.if I hadn't have already tossed my old one I'd put in a box and send it your way.
Thank you North, your help is very much appreciated. The only thing I've found so far is a repair kit. and even then all the guys have said theyre not sure if it comes with it or not.
anytime my friend.and if you don't find anything over the weekend I'll call the local parts store and see if they have one of those kits,if they do I'll crack one open and see whats all included.it would be too bad if you bought one and it wasn't there.
