Uni tailgate side piece idea

I need to replace both side pieces on the unbody tailgate and I have and idea that I would like to bounce of you all. If I took a piece of hard wood and made it the same size as the side pieces them rounded the corners of the wood with a router could I then pound the metal around it to make the side pieces? Here is a picture of the tailgate pieces I'm talking about...

I'm not a metal craftsman but this is the only thing short of having a stamp mould made that I could think of, any other ideas would be welcome.

I don't think wood will be hard enough to use as a form for steel. It looks like it can be made with a shrinker/stretcher.

For what it will cost in time and effort just buy a entire new tail gate.

kjvforme,
Have you thought about cutting out the bad pieces back to good solid metal and then use the bad piece to make another piece using two pieces of metal? One for the inside piece and the other to form the back piece. Then weld them together and grind it. Weld the piece back into the tailgate and grind the welds flat and do the appropriate bodywork. This all depends on your ability to weld and manipulate Metal. Good luck with it. Im kind of lucky being that my Son is a great welder and between him and I we tend to be able to make our own patch panels. I have run into 3 and 4 inch deep pockets of bondo to many times not to cut it out and replace the damage with a patch panel.

If they just sold that piece I would have replaced them by now. The cost for a new tailgate plus the shipping to get it here is beyond my budget right now.
