Master cylinder teardown
I'm rebuilding the master cylinder on my 1967 Mercury M100 pickup. This is part of my on going summer project. Today I removed the m/c from the truck. The reservoirs were empty, and covered in surface rust. Not surprising, since it sat for over 15 years before I bought it. When I popped the lid, I had hoped to just add some fresh brake fluid, but it was not to be. When I saw the rust, I knew it had to be rebuilt or replaced. Up here in Canada, Napa quoted me a price of just under $150.00 for a new one. Yikes! The rebuild kit was only $50.00, so I went with that. It should be here in about a week. I dismantled the m/c and took pics here:

When the kit comes in I'll take more. The m/c needs to be honed out as well. I'm going to paint it with Tremclad aluminum paint. We'll see how that turns out - never done that before. I just don't like the look of a rusted m/c. Any pointers, words of advise, etc, are always appreciated.
I'm curious though, why manufactures wouldn't use a material other than cast iron. If it weren't for the rust, it wouldn't have to be rebuilt.
Thank,
John
Advance Auto Parts price ranged for $18-$44 USD also.
Much eiser to replace and get some sort of part warranty.
My $.02.
Good luck and happy motoring,
Tim
I hear you. Sometimes I'm inclined to buy the new stuff. I'm always concerned it will come from China. Part of the reason I like to rebuild stuff is the learning factor. I've never rebuilt a m/c, so for me learning how to do it gives me satisfaction. I will always try to buy OEM first, then American aftermarket, then anything not made in the third world, then anything that will get me by until I can find the correct part. Through all of this, I have to keep my budget in mind. The difference in the dollar is bad enough, but the shipping charges from some of these companies is outrageous! I also try to shop locally at Napa, because they know me, and they're experienced in the business. I would rather pay a bit more for their service, than give my money to Walmart to save a dime.
OK, I just realized this is turning into a rant... Sorry guys! I'll close by saying I really love this site and all the helpful people on it.
Later,
John
