Broken spring

The shift lever on my trans (see below) has been very sloppy and loose for about a month. Today I crawled under the truck. Found that there is a small bracket just to the right (toward passenger side) of where the lever enters the trans. Connected to this bracket is a small spring about 2 1/2 in. long. The other end of the spring obviously connects to the lever to keep it from flopping left and right - the last inch or so of the spring is not coiled like the rest of the spring. What does this end of the spring attach to and how? How much of the spring is gone? Is there a hole in the lever that the spring goes thru? Does it go AROUND the lever? I can find no drawing or description in any of the manuals.

As ever, your advice appreciated. Thanks.

STOP! Please put your pencils down, close your test booklet and pass it to the center isle. This test is finished. :-)

I found the missing part of the spring. The spring has two different coils at opposite ends, one is about 1/4 inch dia. the other about 3/4 inch dia. The small coil goes into the hole in the bracket (already attached) the larger goes around the base of the shifter - it actually goes around the dust boot. I found the most of the larger coil still on the shifter.

Will need to jury-rig as no one lists the spring. But now we all know where it is suppose to go.

Combining the fact that no one lists the spring and it wraps around the dust boot, I am wondering if someone has already rigged it at some point in the past. Just a thought.
