.. Oil filter something....
Somebody someplace was talking about some oil system filter thing they added to their truck, basically made it so they can change the filter without dropping the oil. And well of course, replacing the oil lost by the filter every change, but they were going 30k on an oil change or more, plus whatever they swapped during the filter change. And I think he mentioned he burned some oil too. (No surprise there...)
It sounded like he had the truck brand new, so the oil burning thing was confusing me as well.
Anyways.
This doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
Yea, 30k on oil sounds good, but oil breaks down after a while.
Can you imagine the viscosity of 30k mile oil?
I think he perhaps failed to see that oil breaks down and does not lube as well.
However, he did state he oil tested every filter change, and while his numbers were "higher" then normal in some places, they were all consistant.
I really feel bad for his system, because I am sure just a filter change is not enough to keep your system lubed properly.
I would think 10k max on miles for this type of setup.
Change filter at 5k. Drive extra 5k on clean filter.
I wouldn't do that with conventional or cheap synthetics
The bypass system filters a small portion of the oil as it cycles, but it filters it down to a much small particle level. 2 microns if I recall correctly. I think the full flow filter filters to 10 microns.
If you're using dino oil, there probably isn't a benefit to the bypass filter
system due to the oil breaking down as mentioned above.
If you're using synthetic oil, you can go to extended drain intervals since the synthetic oils don't break down like conventional oils. This makes the
extra cost of the the synthetic oil more cost effective. If going to extended drain intervals, it's important to have a sample tested to make
sure the oil is holding up and the engine wear is acceptable.
