My Haynes manual says that their is a light duty & a heavy duty version of the ZF tranny. One has an external slave & one has an internal slave. Do both trannys have the granny low 1st?Do both have small block pattern or is one a big block & the other a small block bolt pattern.
Btw which transfer cases did they use with these.

I wasn't aware there was two different types of ZF 5-speed transmissions. My '90 F-250 has a ZF and it has an external hydraulic slave cylinder. There IS a Mazda M5OD and a M5ODHD 5-speed transmission. The '90 on up big block trucks and M5ODHD used the external slave cylinder, all others are internal,'88 & '89 big blocks are external, all others are internal, all '83 to '87 clutch slaves are external. 1988 on up small blocks used internal clutch slaves. This is from a Chilton's manual. I don't know about you, but it's as clear as mud. I also have the Borg Warner 13-56 manual transfer case. The ZF has the low granny gear and a fifth O.D.
Hey Copper, My Haynes manual says "Transmissions available from 1988 include the Mazda M5OD 5-speed, the S5-42 ZF 5-speed light duty and heavy duty and the T-18 4-speed." Farther down it says
"The S5-42 ZF 5-speed is available in two case configurations; concentric slave cylinder design (light duty) or external slave cylinder (heavy duty)." So from what your book says it sounds like the heavy duty ZF was in the big blocks (because of the external slave).Do you have a big block in your truck? I wonder if there is any difference to the internals of the tranny or they are exactly the same just with the different slaves and bolt patterns?
