Hi, I am very new to these older trucks(and doing my own work), and have a problem with my 66 that i just got. The blinkers light up the tail lights but, when i put on the brakes nothing. So where should i look on the truck to remedy this. Is there a switch on the brake peddle itself? is there something on the fire wall? Try and point me in the right direction. Thanks i appreciate the advice.
the brake light switch on these is on the master cylinder where 2 red wires slide on...many times they can get gummed up from nasty residue over umpteen years plus I have heard these switches have a tendacy to go bad although Ive never experienced that myself personally.
I believe there is a fuse also for the brake light as well in the fuse block on the firewall inside above the foot dimmer switch.
Sometimes, just pulling the wires off and on again can help the switch to give it a fresh point of contact.
The pressure switch on the master cylinder is the most likely culprit. They're inexpensive and easy to replace. Make sure the connections are clean and tight.
I believe the turn signals and brake lights use the same fuse, so that shouldn't be the problem. If you find the pressure switch is not the problem, the brake lights do go through the turn signal switch. It's quite possible the connections in the t/s switch are worn or corroded.
alright that sounds like a great place to start, i will go look in the morning. Thanks ill report back in what ive found, hopefully it is as easy as it sounds
Update: Well i unpluged the 2 wires on the master cylender pulled them back in, put a crowbar on the peddle, ran to the back of the truck and poof i have brake lights. BUT i went to o'rilly to pick up some stuff, and i need both of the tail light covers and they cannot get them for me. So dose anyone know where i can the tail light covers?
which style of bed do you have ?? Theres 4 different ones depending on the year of your truck... and it all depends on the type of bed you have. let me know and I can look them up for you.
awesome, the only place i could even think to look was LMC truck, and im sure they wanted more for them than i wanted to pay. At this point in time i am more concerned about legal than perfect. LOL
