Ignition Switch adjustment?
When I go to crank my '83 F100 it seems the key doesn't quite turn far enough forward in the ignition to kick the starter over at times lately. So far, it will catch hold and spin the engine over after a few times of trying, but I'm beginning to become concerned about it failing. Is there an adjustment for this or do I need a new ignition switch? Thanks for any help!
The switch is on the bottom of the steering column up on top. There is a 10mm nut and a stud. Loosen the nut and the ignition switch will slide up and down on the column.
You would need to push it a little closer to the steering wheel for more engagement. Disconnect the battery first, loosen the nut and while holding the key in the crank position, push the ignition switch up towards the wheel until it bottoms out and then tighten it back down.
I have done it myself before, but you may want to use a second set of hands. I hold the key with my right hand, reach up under the column with my left and adjust it. Let the key go and while holding the switch still, tighten it down.
Piece of cake.
