New Engine

1991 F150 4X4, 5.0, 5 speed, Powerdyne S/C

So I burnt a piston on my engine so I figured it was a good time to get some more performance out of my pickup. I was thinking of ordering a 347 stroker long block to put in. Also debating on a built 351, kinda leaning toward the 347 just seems like it would be easier overall. I do plan on running my S/C on my new motor too.
Any suggestions/opinions?
Any recommended places to buy from?

Spend the money you would use on the 347 stroker kit on heads for a 351 and you'll be WAY ahead. A 347 with stock heads won't make any more HP than the 302 did, but with better heads you could have a 400hp 351 before any boost is applied.

How much more work/money would be put into making the switch from the 302? Would I need to get a new computer to run the 351 efi and such?
exhaust?

You'll need a mass air computer regardless what option you choose, neither will run very well on the stock 5.0 SD computer. If you source a complete 5.8EFI motor you'll have everything you need for the swap besides the computer and SEFI engine wiring harness. Updating he pistons and cam in the donor motor isn't a bad idea since you do plan on using boost. The 5.8 block is a lot stronger than the 5.0 block too, 450+hp is pushing the limits of the 5.0 while the 5.8 block can handle hundreds more.

Ok so youve convinced me to go to a 5.8 swap instead.
I just found a 91 f250 with a 5.8 and a manual trans. would that be the donor I need? How do I know if it has the maf computer or not? what else would I need from that Pickup besides complete engine and computer?

I would drag the whole donor truck over if possible, then sell off and junk the remainder when you're done. But if you can keep it around, it'd be a nice parts truck, especially if it's a 4x4.

But keep in mind that starting in 1994 (and some late 1993) models, the 5.8 aka 351W came with a roller camshaft, or provision for same. This is nice to have but not mandatory.

The '91 is probably not mass air, easy to tell just look for a mass air meter next to the airbox. The motor is a good donor but the computer and harness is no help.

Ok well that truck is not an option, but I might have a line on a 5.8 out of a 94 E350 from a junkyard.

That should be a roller motor but it probably won't be mass air either.

Does you're '91 have the TFI module on the distributor or on the fender? If it's on the dizzy then you can eliminate a wiring issue by getting an early EFI 5.8 with the same setup.

Im not really sure. The distributor has a 1 large connector on it if that helps. What am I looking for?

Also do I need a 5.8 computer for a manual trans also or will a computor out of a auto work too? If I can find an earlier EFI 5.8L donor can I change over to a MAF later once I source one out? I would really like to just start driving my pickup again. Im driving a 87 Toyota now and its just not the same

Yes a 5.8 computer for a manual or C6(3-spd) auto will work. You can't miss the TFI module it is bolted right on the side of the distributor. If you don't have one there it's mounted on the drivers inner fender in a heatsink.. See the pics below. In any case it would be better if the 5.8 motor had the same version distributor since the 5.0 one won't fit.

I just got home with a '90 Bronco with a 5.8L auto that is gonna be my donor vehicle.
I couldnt find a later one with MAF so I figured this way I can at least get my truck on the road and upgrade it later. It has the TFI on the dizzy, same as my pickup.

Is there anything tricky that I need to watch out for when doing this swap, or is it kinda just a plug and play type thing?

It'll bolt right in you just need the right flywheel or flexplate for your transmission. What one does it have?

Your first post you mentioned that you burned a hole in a piston.Make sure you get your fuel trim right with your new engine.

Going too lean will do that.

If you have ever used a cutting torch, just think what do you do to get the fire hotter?........................you turn up the o2.

Yeah Im not putting the S/C on there until I switch it over to MAF and get it tuned

The F150 its going in has a five speed and the Bronco has an auto with a push button for OD..

What about the computer side of it? Am I doing more than taking one out and plugging the other in?
