I have a 77 F/150 Custom 351M, manual trans with the granny gear. I think the trans is the T-18. What is the gearing for this transmission. I am trying to calculate what would happen if I upsized to a 32 or 33 inch tire and tried to start out of first. Right now the only use 1st has is for towing, which I am not using right now. However, If I am going to bog out or still not have a usefull 1st geat I'll keep the 235/75/15s I have and continue to start out of 2nd which works great off the line. I know the axle gearing plays into this but I am not sure what it is. How do I find out?
If someone could talk some sense into me, or show me the light on finding the answer to this question I'd really appriciate it.
Thanks,
Parker

You may also have a NP435 transmission, they are also common w/ a granny low 1st in Ford pickups. I have a T-18 w/ 3.5 rear gearing and 31" rear tires... Granny low is still very much granny low, w/ the 31" tires. I doubt that 32-33" tires will make 1st much more useful for anything other than a granny low start.

T-18's & T-19's have a cast iron top cover, where NP435's have an aluminum top cover. The first gear on a T-18 is 6.32:1 where on a NP435 is 6.69:1. www.advanceadapters.com has the whole skinny on available transmission ratios.
I have a T-18 in my 1969 F100 2WD that I use primarily for commuting. The 302 is not real torquey, but it starts out OK in 2nd with the 28" tires ("30x9.5R15") and 2.75 gears in the 9". If it is starting out uphill or towing anything, I need to use 1st gear.
