I am trying to wire an aftermarket remote door unlocker and having a heck of a time trying to find a constant hot wire to tap from. It does not need to be a fused wire, the kits wire harness already has fused lines. I just want to find something that is easily accessable for tapping. I thought about tapping one of the lines from the dinger, but it appears that it does not have a constant hot. I tried to trace the line from the cig lighter, but it almost immediately goes into a bundle of wires behind the dash.
So can anyone give me some direction, location, and color code where I can easily tap an always hot wire under the dash, without tearing the dash and wiring looms apart? I tried going through my Ford EVTM for some idea, but the diagrams don't give you an idea of where exactly the wire is run.
batt. side of fuse 4, 8, (15a) 12(20a) or 16 (30a) in fuse block
fed by BLK/ORANGE wire from fusible link BLACK at starter relay to fuse panel
i use the fuse pin taps, works well, wire tie down.
Are you talking about the fuse block under the hood? (if so, where the heck is there a hole in the firewall, I thought about going that route but was unable to find a pathway.)
Or right before the fuse box. BTW I saw a thick red wire tied to one of the bundles. Any idea what this goes to and is it useable? Man I miss the old days when there was barely any wiring behind the dash.
Ok, first off, all the wires you need to tap run to the ignition switch. I know because I have a keyless entry I installed on mine. Several things you should know before you get into it. The range on mine is terrible. If you are not within ten feet the van, it is difficult to get a clean signal. The location of the antennae is critical. If you are not willing to make sure everything is wired correctly, no shortcuts, then don't bother. Every connection should be soldered and sealed unless you use those wire taps. Your kit should have the instructions, or a web address where you can get the instructions and wiring diagrams. You will need said diagrams to make the connections to the locks as well.
They did come with instructions and a wiring diagram. With the diagram I was able to find the lock/unlock wires in the drivers kick panel. It is not specific where I should get a constant hot, just that I need one. (like I didn't already know that.) The only constant hot they list is a yellow wire to the ignition switch. Which I could not find. I am soldering the wires in and am practically done, I just need a hot. Once I have it all hooked up I am going to fool around with location to see where I get the best signal from.

You might have to get your multi meter out with a paper clip to backprobe the connectors. There is a fuse box under the drivers side dash on the left side panel. The headlight are always hot, also the horn .
Thanks for the suggestion Aeroman. I thought about doing that, but after five minutes on my back and fighting to get my arms around, I found that to be a little too daunting.
I ended up tearing apart the lower half of the dash and tapping the Yellow hot to the iginition. Once I had the covers off it was pretty easy to unshield the group of wires to get enough of the yellow wire to tap.
