speed gear replacement
hello i have an '83 f250 4x4 w/borg-warner tcase and i need to replace the speed gear. can i do this by just removing the rear output yoke? or do i need to open the tcase? thank you for any info.

Your speedo gear replacement--remove rear tail housing (where speedo cable goes in). You will see a spiral gear (plastic) on the mainshaft. You will need an external snap-ring plier (not the eye-type). Be careful: after removing s-ring & pulling old speedo gear off, by hand: there is probably a small chrome ball sitting in an indention in the mainshaft. This ball is very easy to overlook & lose. Without this ball in the shaft, your new speedo gear will not work. Some types of ford speedo gears use a small clip--instead of a ball to fasten speedo gear to mainshaft. Good luck, gearman
