PCV valve missing parts?
I removed my PVC valve to clean it. It's the old style which can be taken apart. Here's a pic:

It seems to me something is missing. Even with the spring installed, the "plunger" does not sit tight against the washer. Is anyone familiar with this type? How is this valve supposed to work? I thought it was just a one way valve. I noted lots of vacuum at the valve with the engine running. As I understand it, it's function is to suck crankcase gases back to the carb, where they're burned with the fuel/air mixture. If that's correct, why the need for a valve?
This is from my 240/300 inline six 1967
Thanks for your help,
John
The reason for the valve is to keep the intake from having a "hole" When there is a no or low vaccum enviorment the valve is closed forcing all air to be drawn through the carb.
If you just had a hose it would lower the amount of air being drawn through the carb and limiting the amount of fuel going in.
Let the hose hang loose sometime and crank away. It can be a real bugger to start with a vaccum leak.
