Throwout bearing

I have a 79 F150 w/ 4sp OD (toploader style) transmission. Yesterday I took it to tranny shop for clutch work. My complaint was noises that were loader w/ my foot off the clutch pedal that would get quieter if I depressed the clutch. I was living w/ general whirring but I started getting metal grinding noise that would go away if I depressed the clutch just alittle. They said my throwout bearing was bad and perhaps the clutch disk. I authorized them to replace the throwout bearing and evaluate the clutch. They said plenty of meat on the clutch disk and the throwout was indeed bad. They rattled the bearing when in their hand when I picked up the truck. So initially the truck was quieter and the pedal smoother feeling. As the truck got warm I started hearing the throwout whirring. Today as truck is warm I'm starting to hear some squeeks that will go away if I depress the clutch. Ideas?

Throwout bearing

It might be that the bearing is rubbing against the clutch, they are supposed to sit back a bit and not touch the clutch until you press the pedal. My 73 has a return spring that pulls it back away from the clutch. If that's not the problem, it might be the bearings on the shaft, see if you can remove the inspection plate and try to move the shaft, see if it has play in it. If it does, it could be the pilot shaft bushing / bearing.

Throwout bearing

LAST EDITED ON 25-Mar-01 AT 12:35 PM (EST)[p]First off tell the trany shop to replace the entire clutch. It's extremely difficult to get proper adjustment with a worn disc, pressure plate, pilot brg and or flywheel. If the old rel brg was still whistling when the pedal is depressed that brg was still in contact with the diaphram on the pressure plate creating excess wear on the diaphram. Until you replace the clutch and surface the flywheel you will continue to have a problems with this noise. Just have it fixed properly before the brg or pressure plate start to come apart and do some serious damage to the input shaft. After all a complete Oe clutch is available for 125-150.00. Let me know if I can answer or explain anything else. tkw636190@cs.com
