fuel question
I have an 07 f-150 with a 5.4. I have always used 87 octane fuel since it was brand new. But latley i have noticed an "octane ping" when i am driving up hills between 25-35mph. The truck has no load on it and the RPM's are between 1800-2100 the road is steep, so sometimes it has to downshift to get up it. I do hear it even when i am driving on level ground and at a slow speed through a neigborhood. I buy gas at quiktrip and was just wondering if i needed to use 89 or 91 octane. thanks

Run your current tank down as far as you feel safe and get a 1/4 tank of 89 at a Shell, Chevron or other brand name station. . Run it down and do the same again. Then get a 1/4 tank of 87 and listen for the ping. If it is still there I'm thinking that you may have a carbon build-up from the off brand gas.

Suggest also switching to a name brand. You could also ak at Quicktrip, if they'll tell you, if they switched suppliers. For example, the no-name gas up the corner from me is either BP, Gulf or Exxon at any given time. The Sunoco station, which is supposed to be Sunoco, also gets deliveries from the same truck, sometimes???? and the BP station gets directly from BP-Amoco etc. So you really don't know what you're dealing with. For now I would go to Shell or BP and get some name gas for a while and see what happens.
