i am wanting to put 4" exaust on my early 1999 f250 7.3 it has 4" muffler back do i have to make any mods to run it all the way if so what are they and what is th e advantage with 4" thanks in advance
You'll want an exhaust temperature gauge, when they breath better you can get higher exhuast temps when you work them hard. Couple the larger exhaust with a better air box like the AIS. Also on mine, I have the ZF six transmission, there is what I think is a heat shield next to the tranny that you have to flex sideways to get the larger drop pipe from the turbo outlet installed. once installed it can hang as normal, just in the way due to a bend in the pipe for getting it through the area. Takes a second set of hands on that, otherwise the entire rest of the job is something you can do by yourself.
If you get a 4" turbo back then everything that you need is in the kit from the turbo outlet to the tailpipe. Clay at Riffraff is running a special on a MBRP 4" turbo back at an unbeleivable price.
I bought the 4" Stainless steel turbo back kit and it came with everything I needed and included a longer pipe for extended cab trucks. I need the Stainless in my area because they salt the roads in the winter and it eats the regular exhaust right up.
If you are going to the trouble to go to 4", get rid of the stock muffler as it is where most of your restriction is anyway. You can delete the muffler or replace it (with a Walker Big Truck Muffler) to fix a lot of the restriction issue. You'll have to go aftermarket to fix the crimp in the 3" downpipe though...
I would suggest what what jim said above, Clay has a super deal on the MBRP aluminum single system, give him a call...With the muffler, a nice mello growl and lower EGT's is the benefits...And a tad better performance..
if you got a 4" from the muffler back, I think you'll just need a 4" down pipe and some 4" sections to connect to the muffler.
Yep, thats it.
I just did this last weekend. I ordered a downpipe for about $100 shipped, and it runs from the turbo to right where the transmission crossmember starts. I mounted the down pipe and just measured what I needed from the end of the new down pipe to the muffler delete on the other end. It was around 6' so I went to the exhaust/muffler shop down the road and told them to cut me a piece at the length I needed and I had them open each end up so the 4" down pipe and 4" muffler delete would slip into the piece I bought.
I paid $50 for that piece from the exhaust shop.
EDIT; BTW, the 4" down pipe lowered my EGT's more than I thought it would. Its a great move!
Not to hi-jack, but I also want to replace stock exhaust with 4" system. I'm not looking for loud. Can any of you comment on sound, install issues, quality differences between MBRP and magnaflow?
Fellas,
I just bought a 05 psd Lariet 4x4 with 112,000 miles on it. The truck is in good shape. It has an EDGE chip and K&N air filter, other than that is completely stock. I want to upgrade the exhaust. My main & only reason for doing so is to lower the EGT's prolonging the life of the engine. I plan on keeping the truck for a very long time. I HAVE NO IDEA how to begin to select an exhaust. Which brand/size do you guys recommend? What things to do you look for? I don't need anything too fancy and don't want anything thats real lould. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot
My bad, the air filter is a "magnum force AFE". I know everytime i mention the truck has a K&N air filter, everyone has the same reply....."Take it off the truck" also, i keep hearing that the stock ford filter is the best, no need to upgrade. Thanks for the info man
