couple issues with my 89

So I got my 89 F350 on the road and I just wanted to post up about some of the issues im having.

First, it seems like the truck has a lot more power when its cold then when it warms up. Would timing cause this?

My coolant temp gauge on the dash doesn't move at all. I checked the wire that goes to it and its connected, but no movement. I know the gauge is useless, but I like to have stuff operational. Can I ohm the sensor out before going through the hassle of removing and possibly breaking it?

Also, my truck only manages to get about 12 mpg. It has a new fuel filter, and although im not expecting great mpg numbers, I wanted to know if thats what most people are getting with a F350 351w 4x4 with 3.55 rears and a zf5 trans.

thank you!

Try this very simple little test, turn the key on & remove the (single wire) connector from the temp sender & ground it to the block right beside the sender.

If the temp gauge reads full hot you need to change the T-stat.

Sounds like the engine is not warming up & it's staying in open loop/running rich mode.

you might have a leaky valve, or rings could be bad. when all this gets hot it expands and changes shape, so things might not be sealing well.

12 mpg is about right for that truck, min only get 11-12 and i dont drive it hard.

what he said about the sensor, you can tell if your runnin rich if you let your truck warm up and then stick your hand on the end of the tailpipe and hold it there a sec and smell your hand. if it smells overly of gas then it rich

Well the other thing that might make a difference it has an aftermarket y pipe that ust dumps out under the cab, completely straight piped. It does have the 02 sensor in the pipe though.
