I have a 57 with what I assume is an open axle, because when I jump on it only one wheel spins. I am looking into dropping the truck so my plan is to notch the frame and flip the axle. While I am doing that I would like to address the one wheel wonder issue. I have read about the 67 - 72 ford 9" rear ends and how they are bolt in replacements for a '57, but are they limited slip? I know a guy parting out a '70 f100 and I can get the rear end cheap ($75) but he doesn't know if it is limited slip or open. Are all the 67 -72 f100 9 inch rear ends limited slip. How would I tell, the truck has no motor, so my jump on the gas test won't work. Would I be better off working on my rear end to retro fit it to be limited slip? Is there a kit available? The truck is just a cruiser for weekends, but I would like to leave two black marks when I want to.
This is pushing some damaged brain cells pretty hard but I think if you turn one rear wheel/drum by hand and the other wheel turns the same direction it is a limited slip, if the other wheel turns the opposite direction (or doesn’t turn at all) it is not a limited slip diff.
First of all, it's not likely you're going to find a 40 year old limited slip that still has enough clutch material to be of any use, so why not just go ahead and put a locker in it?
Another option is to just replace the third member (the center section with the gears in it). You can use the 3rd member from any 9" rear as long as the spline count matches what you have. More than likely you have 28 spline axles. The most likely candidates to find a Traction Lock 3rd member are the muscle cars and the big luxo boats; Mustangs, Torinos, Galaxies, Lincolns, etc.
If you look at the tag on the 3rd member (if it has a tag) the Traction Lock's are indicated with an "L" as part of the gear ratio.
Your truck should already have a 9". Now, would the '70 9" fit, sure, but it could be like the one you have already. For $75, I'd buy the 9" anyway, and build one or the other into a locked rear with gears that are right for you.
