Sad day here in Cali, They decide to add a NEW test to the all rady pain in the but Smog test. And sadly my 1991 Full Size Bronco. She runs great, passes Smog, But not Evap. here the Kicker, To pass I have to Replace the faul take to a Ca Approved one, $400 bucks, Insane, so now she parked, and I decided I will find a pre smog Ford to transfer all the running gear and engine. Any one have a suggestion what Truck I be able to use the max amont from my bronco?
$400 is a pretty low threshold to scrap a '91. I take it a "faul take" means fuel tank? My smog guy says most of the failures are the carbon canister that gets crunched.
So if it needed 4 new tires at $95 + tax each you'd scrap it too??????
In the case of the Bronco, Its a Roll over Valve on top of the fuel tank, the whole take has to be replace with one that dont have it. There a lot of Full Size bronco that are failing the test because of this. And its simple come to a worth factor to me. Im NOT feeding that beast any more, I have my 72 F100 and my 2002 Focus. So now the 91 Bronco becomes a Donor. It 4x4, 351 EFI. strong as hell. Runs great. So Im thinking what year truck (PreSmog 1975) will it all fit.
What's in worth in Nevada or Arizona? Sounds like a good combo.
My guess is it will cost a lot more than $400 to do an organ transplant, especially since you have to find a roadworthy recipient to start the project.
However, your truck, your money.
My '85 smogs perfect, but the trans and ac need attention to the tune of about twice what I could sell it for. That and all the weatherstrip is starting to go, so it takes the joy out of the whole thing. (+ the wife isn't a believer...) So it's frustrating to have an older, basically sound rig and then find you just don't have the will to pump another dollar into it....
I tried the Cash for Clunker, It has to Pass the smog here to be use in that. As to the Cost, Im sick of Ca smog, in the long run, chnaging it out for a build on a presmog, I see a all around win, NO longer needs smogging, BUT with all the advanges of the 91 drive train and when ever else I use from it
It has to pass smog for Cash For Clunkers? Kinda defeats the purpose of the program doesn't it? That seems very stupid. Being in California though, the stupidity doesn't surprise me.

If you drop the drivetrain in an older vehicle (pre-75), it will now have to meet all the smog regs for 1991 and...
you no longer get the "happy" opportunity to go to a regular smog station- you have to go to a federal referee station for the remaining life of the vehicle...
Who can make this happen you ask?....any law enforncement officer (as a result from a routine traffic stop- they even have manulas with pics showing illegal engine swaps in ricer cars, etc.), any AQMD staff or DMV if notified by a mechanic who is doing repairs on your vehicle.
LOL, You miss read the Law, I have done this in the past, Engine swap is ok as long as I use the Frame and Body from a presmog, If I use the Frame, Then I have to go by the frame engine combo years. I did the same thing with a 2002 GMC 2500 to a 73 Apachy. and went to Court becaus ea officer tried that. The Law encourages you to use more updated engine, BUT you cant drop a Older NONsmog ina smog controlled with out going to Ref.
