I was going over some stuff under the hood and decided to check the clamps on the intercooler tubes. They were all a little loose so I snuged them down but noticed that on the hot side of the y pipe the clamps have springs on them which led me to beleve they wernt suposed to be all the way tight. Is their suposed to be a certain amount of gap in the spring? Also noticed the rubber pieces of hose had some oil on them is this normal?
Not a dumb question at all, all I can really say from experience is good n tight, if they aren't tight enough you will find out really quick when you mash on it caue it will blow them off but you CAN over tighten them and it will bend the connection at the intercooler. Just snug them up man and you will be fine.
This might be a good place for somebody to further explain the "hairspray" thing that was metioned on another post. I would but I don't know the particulars. My guess is that you spray the inside of the boots before you put them on?I don't like the spring clamps either seems like some engineers extra dollar idea???. Is there a prefered sytle or brand to replace them?
Cattle Rancher as for the delay in answers :1. Good things come to those that wait (heard that somewhere)2. It's summer, the guys that know all the answers are probably OUT either having fun in there truck or working to make money so they can go out and have fun in their truck.3.Are giving us newer guy's a chance to give some input.
71 in-lbs is the technical answer, but I like good and tight better Remember there are soft pieces in there, especially the intake plenums, so don't over tighten them. I also like the hairspray trick, but my daughter keeps getting upset when I steal her bottle.
Just clean the boots and pipe ends up, then shoot them with a coat of hairspray. It provides a tacky surface which helps the boots grip.
Same as above plus I took 80 grit sand paper and scuffed the intercooler pipes gently where the boots contact and then sprayed them with extra hold. Good and snug. No worries.
Did the same thing mentioned by Chris and Dan but also so the oily problem didn't come back, I did the CCV mod(Crank Case Ventilation). There's some great writeups, do an advanced search in the 7.3 section and you'll find it.. Good luck..
I'm still running stock boots with my early '99 with 230k on it; I've never had problems with them. I've had them off a few different times and would clean them up. I'm upgrading everything to the later model 3", and will be putting on all new boots.
The spring on these clamps is to maintain a constant pressure on the clamp. You are suppose to tighten the bolt down so that the spring is fully compressed.
