302 smog removal

i want to plug the holes off in the back of my heads what size bolt do i need to plug them off? the smog holes that is the engine is a 91 5.0 thunderbird engine going carbed in my 58 f-100

I believe it's a 5/8 coarse thread.

do i need a washer or anything or just the bolt tighened straight to the head

Just a very short bolt will be fine with no washer, possibly some black goo sealant. Usually there's a lot of carbon in the threads which seals them. You can also use 5/8 NC set screws.

If you can't start the screws you might need to borrow a tap to clean up the threads a little, even an old dull one will work okay for this.

I put some hi-temp silicone around mine, on the threads and under the head, no washer.
