transfer case swap

I am currently working on a 1990 F250 4x4 with a 351W for a buddy. I replaced the clutch and then reliezed the transfer case was bad. My buddy also has a 1983 F250 with a 300 in it with a manual transmission in it. Are the transfer cases interchangeable? Are the trannys? Any info would be helpful.

The transmissions are likely different but since both motors have the same bolt pattern they are interchangable. Can't say if the x-fer cases are though.

Thanks. That is good to know. If I have to, I will trade out the trannys.

just look to se if the X-case on the 83 is also a BW 1356

Ford transfer cases all use the same bolt pattern and input from 70's to 1996. Meaning, any TC from a Ford will bolt to any trans of the same time period. The difference is in the tcase output and length. '83 would be either a BW1355 or NP203. You would need your Tcase for a direct trans swap. So, of you both have the same wheelbase truck, tcase and driveshafts would need to be swapped. Of course that depends upon the fact that both use the same size u-joints.
