1986 f250 6.9L diesel just purchased, when running has oil pressure on the low side of the normal. At idle it may even drop below normal line. A diesel mechanic that did some work prior to my purchase indicated that this was normal, but I am uncomfortable reading low oil pressure. Is it normal?
The Gauge isn't supposed to drop below the normal mark with the engine running.
The oil pressure sending unit can go bad due to heat, or due to restriction in the oil flow in the sender.
Test the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, and if the oil pressure is within exceptable limits... (10-LBS per 1000-RPM is concidered acceptable on a gas engine for example) then I'd change the sending unit.
If there is no rattling or other sounds coming from the engine to indicate low oil pressure, then I'd replace the sending unit.
