What is required to change from an 89 E4OD to manual with regard to the computer. The mechanical,ie, driveshaft, clutch pedals etc, I don't need answers to. I have an 1989 E350 cutaway, 460, E4OD, FI. I don't know how much info the trans gives the computer, and what does the computer do if it doesn't see the transmission there? Thanks, Bob
I don't have a lot of experience with your specific question so don't give my advice a lot of value here...
I believe your truck has the EEC IV? computer which I believe will look for some feedback from the tranny to allow it to adjust engine performance, shift points etc. I think that you will need to have the computer reprogrammed or replaced with a program/computer that understands the manual tranny. You might also need to look into calibrations for the speedometer and cruise control. Maybe a simple swap, or what with all the computerized stuff now adays, you might have a bit of computer work on your hands.
Now for a question, why do you want to change to manual? I know, they are more fun than an auto, but on a big truck like a 350, why would you want to row through the gears? Most 350s are not "sport trucks". The automatic will do a better job of shifting for this size truck and if you tow or do off roading the automatic will usually be a better choice due to 1) Torque multiplication; 2) Easier speed control; 3) Most drivers don't know how to shift a stick properly while towing or crawling through the woods. #1 and 3 are some reasons why manual tranny trucks often have lower tow ratings than the auto version.
I pull about 14K of 5th wheel, and am not happy with the gear splits on the auto. I'm looking into; a US Gear OD splitter, a close ratio HD 5sp direct, adding a 3 sp Brownee aux. I get mixed replys about pulling in OD on the auto. If I'n not suppose to pull in OD, there is no reason to have an OD transmission. According to my trans temp gauge, pulling temp is around 130 degrees (I have HD cooler, Deep pan,and spin on external filter).
I'm just asking, listening & thinking. Bob
