I have the electronic shift on the fly 4wheel drive. Went to the dunes today and kicked it in four high like usual and got stuck right away. Had a friend get out and found out it wasnt in 4wheel drive even thought the indicator light showed it was on the dash. so i put it in neutral and tried again and this time it engaged and it took right off. So i kept driving and a hundred yards up same thing happened. It kicked itself out of 4wheel drive. What could be causing this? Im thinking its something electrical because sometimes i would have to turn the switch back and forth before it would light up that it was in 4wheel drive. Any ideas?
You might try tapping the motor that shifts the transfercase. If it's not going all the way into gear, it could knock itself back out. From reading here, it seems that a vacuum problem would cause the light to not operate normally.
The vacuum would have nothing to do with the light. When the Xfer case motor switches up to 4x4 or 4lo the power to the light is turned on when the system engages into 4wd. You may have a short in the electrical that when it shorts it's like flipping the switch back to 2wd. I know my old 00 X had issues with the 4wd not engaging and come to find out the harness that plugs into the Xfer case motor was corroded and needed to be replaced.
Next time, try manually locking the hubs and see if it stays in 4x4.
If the light is on, that means that physically, the transfer case is in 4x4.
If the hubs are not latching, you could try cleaning/lubing them, but I suspect that they are done for. The latch breaks and they won't stay locked anymore.
