shifting

first off i have a 1968 ford f250 automatic...
this is a classic story of messing with something i had no business messing with. i removed my steering wheel to access the cancellation cam. i was trying to repair the turn signal because it seemed to be a little off because when the lever was in neutral the right turn signal would be on. after i fixed that... for whatever reason... i decided to unbolt the top and bottom nuts that were at the bottom of the plate. the column then popped off. i managed to reassemble it but now the shifting is screwed up. at first the truck would not start. then i noticed that you could now move the column shift lever out of park with out pressing on the brake pedal. after moving the shift lever back and forth a few times from part to 1st it will now start while the in park. but the problem with shifting from park with out pressing on the brake is still there. what did i do and how do i fix it?

There is a tab that extends from the shift tube thru the column to actuate the neutral safety switch. When you removed the upper bearing retainer this allowed the shift tube to move slightly upward and likely bent the tab.

Unless someone made some mods these trucks did not have any type of interlock to prevent them from being pulled out of park without the brake pedal depressed.

out of habit i always pressed the brake and never noticed that i could just move the shifter. after looking at it a little more i realized that my shifter is a little off now. the marker use to be dead on but now its about 1/4 inch off. which really isn't a big deal for now. if the shifter is too far over on the P side then the truck won't start. i have to just move it to the right a tad and then the truck will start.
