E40D trans has a hard shift

When Im in bumper to bumper traffic and moving at a pace of 5mph or less. The trans will shift from 1st to 2nd with a jolt, as if some one ran into the back of me. And this has happend 2 times, I went to pass someone on the interstate and if it was like the trans got "confused". As soon as a let off the gas a little, it shifted just fine. I have gone to local Ford dealers and there responce is "I dont know whats wrong." But they will glady take my money. This problem is really bugging me, any help would be great. Thanks

I have a '94 F-150 (130,000m) with the o.d. tranny, and I also get hard shifts in all gears, but not all the time. Only seems to do it after warmed up, and seems worse when hot outside/running the a/c. Maybe some kind of valve sticking? If I'm real gentle accellerating, it helps. I tried a 'partial' atf replacement and filter change (didn't drain converter) with no improvement. Can anyone recommend a 'great' atf to use for a complete atf change-out? Thanks.

I dont believe there is really anything "wrong" with your tranny, the E4ODs are just funny by nature. I do know that there has been at least 2 updates on the torque converters since your truck was new. If it still bothers you, call Jet Performance or Banks about your problem. They both offer computer enhancements for your tranny. It'll cost you, though.
