Hey guys, I was talking to the transmission guy today, and he said that if I wanted to use a T18, or NP435, that I'd have to install a two piece driveshaft. Is that really neccessary on a two wheel drive, short wheel base pickup? I've never heard of a SWB pickup having a two piece drivshaft.
While I'm here, which heavy duty transmission will fit in my SROD's place, with out going to a different driveshaft? I would love to have the T19, but it's fairly rare. By looking at the T18, it looks about the same length, while the NP435 looks WAY too short. With the previous two, would I be able to use the SROD bellhousing, of do I have to use a T18/NP435 only bellhousing?
It sure would be nice to just drop in a transmission and go! I was originally hoping to keep this to a weekend project.
Thanks alot!
The SROD is leaking big time!! :-)

Hard to believe that you would need a two piece driveshaft for a SWB. WhenI swapped my T18 to a ZF (LWB)I had to have a longer driveshaft made and the new one is at the limit for a driveshft. My old driveshaft is just under 71" (end of yoke to end of yoke). Just measured it because it is sitting on my garage floor. If you need any measurements let me know, the T18 and driveshaft are just sitting there.
Ok, I just found a T19 (dream trans) for sale. It is off of an IHC Scout or something comparable. It was mounted to a Dana 20 transfer case. I guess my next question is will this transmission work on a Ford, eventhough it was off of an IHC? Do I need the bellhousing for it? Since it was off of a 4X4, will it even work with a two wheel drive?
Thanks again, I need to tell this guy whether I'm interested in this thing or not!! :-)

Hope you got my email. I am interested in sellng the T18 if the T19 does not work out.
I do not know if the T19 out of a 4wd will work or not. On the ZF's the only difference between the 2wd and 4wd is the rear housing. I imagine someone has the answer.
Hmmmm... well I'll see if this clown will return my email first, guess he doesn't want to sell it... ;-) I will definitely email you either way, it takes my email a LONG time to recieve any, but I'll email you back ASAP!
Thanks again!

No, you don't need a 2 piece driveshaft. A NP435 will work just fine with the SROD driveshaft, that's what I used on my truck, not sure about a T18 or 19. Either one of those trannies will bolt up in place of your SROD. And, the NP435 has that holy grail 6.69:1 low. No, that IHC tranny won't bolt to your Ford bellhousing, they use a different pattern. The 2wd 435 w/slip yoke(like you have now)will work no problem, just change the yoke on the driveshaft to the C6/Truck 4 speed size.

That would be 2 years of transforming parts into useable vehicles ;-D
I've done the NP 435 swap in more than just my truck, I just did it in a 1980 F100 LWB w/a 3 on the tree(truck has 57000 miles.) That required a driveshaft swap, because the 3 speed is shorter.
It might be easier to find a 435 too, I've never seen a Ford T18 or T19.
We sure haven't talked in a while, just a little update, I got a 1984 Mustang LX V6 for free 3 weeks ago, it is going to get a TT 351W
I like your exhaust system, is that a dual/dual muffler, if so, how does it sound? I've got 2½" duals w/3" tips exiting under the rear bumper, and, no mufflers :-)

That would be a single inlet dual outlet muffler... a true dummy dual setup... lol
I go by your website about once a week, I was glad to see that you FINALLY updated it with new pictures! LOL LOL Unfortunately your sound clip links don't work on my computer. I like your truck it's pretty cool lookin'.
I think i'm going to have a friend of mine put some digital pictures on the internet this weekend. Can't wait to finally show it off to the world!! Lord knows I've done enough work to it! lol...
Later dude...

PS. the sound is nothing short of incredible for a 300. It doesn't sound like an import, even past 4500! I don't think I could say the same for a glasspack. Plus it's got a great popping to it, up and down. Heck it should pop, the exhaust system is only 4- 41/2 feet long!! Oh yeah, I believe the trick to making an I6 sound like a V8 is to make the exhaust as short as possible. By doing that, it doesn't allow the exhaust to smooth out as it would with a long exhaust. So I guess the air is still turbulent by the time it exits, it kinda gives off a "cammy" sound... or for me a WORN OUT CAM...lol :-)
LAST EDITED ON 02-Aug-01 AT 11:44 AM (EST)[p]The sounds don't work?? Is it because they're MP3's, I have the .wav files up there too, I just don't have links to them. Well, there are more pictures coming, I just have to scan 'em. Cammy sound eh? Buy a 270H and install it 4 degrees retarded, then you'll have a cammy sound... Now for me, I don't see any reason to make it sound like an 8, it sounds like a lumpy big block at idle, but, it's got that six cyl bark the second you touch the pedal. That bark may not exist on a stock six though....

While I'm here, is it possible to lengthen a drive shaft, or just shorten a driveshaft?
Just out of curiosity...
Chris
I just talked to a driveline shop the other day. I am doing a Mazda M5OD to T18 swap and will need to have the driveshafts reworked. Yes, driveshafts can be lengthened, they cut the ends off the old one and fit a new tube the correct length. The shop gave me a quote of $65 labor and $.80 per inch for tubing.
The T18 is about 3 inches shorter then the M5OD, so my front shaft needs shortened and my rear shaft needs lengthened.
