Hi,
I recently had my 9 inch rearend out of an '81 rebuilt totally and put it in my '83. The guys at the shop told me that the right axle bearing had spun the race in the housing so much that it might leak oil from that side. I didnt get a chance to actually see what they were talking about but sure enough, about 2500 miles later, its pouring gear oil out of the right side. Any ideas on how i can fix this without getting a new housing?
thanks

If the race spun in the housing, the easiest fix would be a new housing. You could have a new end put on the existing housing, but the rear axle assembly would have to come out and be torn apart. Used 9 inch housings are not that hard to come by.
one thing you might check out is to measure the id of the tube and the od of the axle and check to see if a sealed bearing from say a '72 or so will fit the housing and axle then you will have to check to see if the housing has been milled to use a regular axle seal. I've done this on my '78 but I'm not sure the axles on an '83 will have a smooth surface for the inner part of the seal to ride.
Hey stingray
I am not all that familiar with rearends, do you think you could explain further how to do this? Sorry.
Thanks
