02 7.3 engine going dead

Are there any known problems with the injector wiring harness causing the engine to go dead?

Welcome to FTE. There are known problems with the connector in the injector wiring harness that causes some of the injectors to stop firing, causing a rough running engine. There are known issues with wires chaffing between the IDM and injectors which can cause the truck to die. There have been reports of burnt wires on the IPR which can cause the engine to die.

Perhaps if you can give us some more specific information we can help point you in the right direction.

7.3 known problems

The reason I'm asking. I took my truck to the dealer. It was dying about every mile or so. The CPS had been changed twice. The dealer told me the problem was the injector harness. $900.00 to repair. I told him if he was sure to go ahead and fix it. When I picked it up it went dead several time on the way home. Further test showed a loose or faulty chip I had installed. I'm feeling the harness is a known problem and they just went with that instead of really checking things out. I told them it went dead when I hit a pot hole and that I had a chip.

There is a plug under each valve cover that is known to come loose. As mentioned, it will make the engine run horrible (since it's no longer firing on all 8 cylinders). The fix for that is either a set of $10 retainer clips to hold the connector together, a set of updated wiring harnesses (probably around $40 ea), or a DIY shim.

For the engine to die, you would have to have both connectors come loose at the exact same time. Then not be completely disconnected to allow you to restart and drive some more, before both failing simultaneously again. You've got a better chance of hitting the lotto 3 times before that would happen.

Sorry to say that you got screwed out of $900. A loose chip will kill the motor every time. Now that you've found FTE, spend some time here reading some posts and don't be shy about jumping in and asking questions on anything you don't understand. You'll save yourself a ton of money in the long run.

Now tell us about what chip you have? Have you upgraded the intake and exhaust yet? Hopefully you've got a set of gauges installed so you don't hurt your motor. Did you run some tape across the end of the chip to help hold it in place?

The first thing I would be doing is getting my $900 back.
