I recently purchased a 99 F150 Supercab 4x4 with the 4.6 and automatic trasmission. Like so many other owners of *america's best selling truck* the shifting of the transmission is less then desireable. What i'm planning is to add the shift improver kit from B&M along with one of their supercoolers. And once there, i'm chaning to Mobil One synthetic tranny fluid.
Has anyone made any similiar changes and what were their results? And how do i remove the most amount of fluid from the transmission as possible? I heard i should drain the torque converter, how is this done?
I have a '99 F-150 with the 4.6. I changed the trans fluid with Valvoline's synthetic. It was rather simple. And yes, you can drain the converter. There's a rubber plug on the bottom of the bell housing. Pull the plug and manually position the drain plug to the opening. Use a 10mm socket to pull the plug. You'll drain about 12 quarts.
Remember that your trans may use Mercon V. I don't believe that Mobil One is compatable with Mercon V. Check you're dip stick for the proper fluid. I pull a 4000# travel trailer. The trans fluid seems fine. I also have the factory towing package.
O' by the way. When you drop your pan, a plastic mushroom shaped plug will drop out. Don't get excited. That's the dip stick plug the factory puts in the trans. It pops out when they insert the dip stick tube.
Your right, it does take Mercon V; and i ended up purchasing Amsoil Synthetic fluids for the change instead of Mobil 1. Thanks for the advice on changing the fluid, and i'll have to remember not to panic when i pull the tranny pan.
