The wire in the fuel bowl is for the bowl heater. Not sure of your running issues, except maybe bad fuel. Any codes?
i got to pueblo co where my uncle lives kinda late im going to find somewhere to do a diagnostic on it. it runs but i think i might have lost an injector. when i put diesel kleen inside my fuel bowl it will run for a while then when i try to go up a hill service engine light goes on black smoke comes out then starts to shake and i press on gas pedal with no response, i put diesel clean and it works again for a while. i put a brand new fuel filter and my whater in fuel light didnt go on. also my check engine only stays on for a couple of seconds and then goes off. im 830 miles from home i hope to get it fixed and now to find an injector at a decent price here in pueblo co.
I had a simular problem a few days ago but no SES. It was my I/C boot came loose-off. Put it back on and presto. You might want to check the boots just to make sure before you tear into it.
Good Luck

This is what I was going to suggest.
Black smoke always = not enough air.
Clogged air filter is an unlikely suspect right now unless a bird got caught in the air intake.
Most likely cause is a boost leak.
Check those boots real carefully. One has most-likely slipped off. Running hard in the mountains means more turbo boost than you're accustomed to. Did you hear a loud "pop" when this began?
I don't have the power I used to have, I put a K&N filter in the stock box and put a 4 inch magnaflow exh. from the down pipe back on it and it seems as slowly over the last year or so I started to notice the turbo whine sound fade away to allmost no whine at all and I have noticed a small lose in fuel mileage and power and hardly no black smoke.. I just got back from a camping trip and when I went out today to take my trailer to put it away I had a bad coolant leak and I'm finding out want fun the water pump is to remove.

I wonder if that K&N allowed you to dust your turbo's compressor wheel. Hopefully, that's all that's dusted.
The fading turbo whine is a clue.
Pop off your intake duct and take a photo of the turbo wheel for us to evaluate.
I'm not to sure what you meant by this comment but if it is intended the way that I read into it, this is no way to respond to another member especially a new one.
