No Start No Tach
I fully expected that since I’ve never cleared any previous codes.
We cleared the codes and cranked long enough to check Injection pressure. It was about 3,000psi and the regulator was running about 43% duty cycle.
That all sounded good so we checked codes again and would you believe it threw another cam position sensor code? Luckily he had an old CPS out of a 96 and I just shoved it in without even bothering with an o-ring or clamp.
It fired right up.

The thing that I find interesting is that the new CPS seemed to be functioning properly by virtue of a good tach signal and yet it was not good enough to satisfy some parameter in the PCM.
I did talk to another mechanic and he tests CPS’s using a breakout plug and finds the black ones to be consistently off 50Hz. Not sure what difference that makes to the brain but I’m buying two new gray ones tomorrow and the bad black one goes back to Autozone for a refund.
For good measure we warmed it up and ran a contribution test, it passed.
On a side note, just in case I move, would all of the Powerstroke mechanics on this forum please forward your current addresses to my realtor.
BTW: you can get them from the dealer pretty cheap too. The ones from the mega-auto-part stores sell junk, as you already know. Glad you got it going

I'm going to have to quit saying bad things about those guys.
He’s picking me up 2 today since his communist boss says the 4th of July is no longer a paid holiday for them and he has to work.
I’m told these new gray ones should last a long time but I’m still putting a spare in the glove box along with a 10mm socket.
Thanks for everybody’s help, Joel.
