2004 6.0L F-250 When towing our 5th wheel and climbing a large grade everthing running normal when all of a sudden it sounds like something starts to speed up. I do not seem to loose any power and rpm's remain the same but something just seems to be running away. This will occur for several minutes and then settle down to normal sound for a while and then start all over again. It seems to occur in hot weather or after driving for a while. I have had this to the dealer and they do not seem to know and shrug it off. Truck has 47k miles. Any suggestions? Thanks...Dick Hanford, CA
I believe what you are hearing is the Fan coming on. Not a problem, working as normal.
The fan is electronically controlled and will actually come on in a couple 'stages' (I believe 3 stages but could be wrong). It does make quite a noise when it comes on. If you have not heard it before, you think something is going to come flying out. Don't worry, this is all normal it is pulling LOTS of air though.

Thank you for the info.....I will have to look into this. The sound does seem to come from the center of the engine and is quite loud. A good possibility. Thanks again....Dick
No problem. I remember the first time I heard it, had some of the same thoughts even after reading some of the posts here.
It does get pretty warm there in Hanford. I would think pulling out of the valley would cause the fan to come on.
After hearing it a few times, what surprises me is that how seldom it does come on even when pulling. Guess it shows how good the cooling is on these things.
