7-8 mpg in 4th gear isn't out of the realm of reality on a 460 5spd truck. Everyone I've known that has pulled with this combo ran 93 octane fuel with as much timing as the engine would take without detonating or pinging. They were all running automatics, but a stick will pull the same, you just have to change the gears yourself. In o/d you'd probably be pulling 9-10 mpg. You're still pulling a lighter load than my buddies pulled with their 460's. They were pulling 6500 to 7000lbs. But you have a little more aero drag since a camper ot travel trailer is a little taller than a car hauler. I do believe there is some more power and fuel economy in a 460. It'll probably take a cam, headers and exhaust, bowl blending in the heads, and a custom chip in the PCM to get you there. And don't forget to pay attention to rolling resistance on your tires as well. Consumer Reports reported that as much as 1 mpg can be gain by using tires that have less rolling resistance.
