My pickup has the most ear-piercing whistle when running and it's driving me crazy! Seems to diminish when I lug the engine. I tried swapping carburetors and that didn't solve the issue.
Truck is a '53 F-100 with the 215 I-6 and 3 on the tree. Any advice would be much appreciated!
I have a 400+ mile trip to make next week and it is going to push me over the edge...
Sounds like a vacuum leak. Have you tried spraying starting fluid around vacuum lines intake gasket ect. I'm sure you tried that but if it doesn't find it how about line to distributor or vac advance. Does your truck have vac wipers? Just a though. Kurt G. Y-Blocks rule.
yeah if you got a vac leak and you hit it with starting fluid she'll idle up . also may i congradulate you as one looney from another for " driving it " rather than polishing the fenders !
Check the gasket under the carb. If you've had the carb off recently then this could be the culprit. Carb gaskets are a pain. They might look good but doesn't mean they are. Usually you can run your finger around the base of the carb (before it gets too hot) and either hear or feel the difference if there is a leak there. Good Luck
Possible related question: I have two gaskets under the carb. Bottom one is thick, about 1/4" or so, one on top of it is a thin one. Is this correct? Are they in the right order?
one a phenolic spacer ??? kinda an oddball material thing ??? almost a plastic in some cases . if it is it should be on top of the thin paper gasket . at least thats the way all minez izzez .
I tried the double gasket trick -- didn't solve the problem. However, I found the leak. There is a triangle-shaped piece on the top of the carb, front right-hand side. It is held down by 3 screws. There is a plug in the side of it and it is whistling away. I might try to use silicone or something to stop the madness!

Probably will run a lot better too might need to readjust the carb after you get it stopped. If the plug is threaded, I'd try a wrap of teflon pipe sealing tape.
